Two sizable construction projects have finished up at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. A new medical building was constructed along 8th Ave at 8th Street SE. Also a three level parking structure has been built at 8th Avenue and 10th Street, on a former parking lot adjacent to the main hospital entrance. The structure is built right up to the sidewalk so it gives the corner a nice massing.
In the past five years or so, both city hospitals, Mercy and St. Luke’s Hospital, have had numerous improvement and expansion projects at their facilities. The two medical centers are located about eight blocks apart along 10th Street East at the edge of downtown. The area in between features a number of health related offices and has been designated the “Medical Zone” in the recently completed River Corridor Redevelopment Plan.

Has there been any talk of a third hospital in the metro area? Seems like the CR/IC area is growing enough that it might warrant another one. Is the University of Iowa hospital the only one in Iowa City?
They are supposed to be building a hospital here in Castle Rock (over near the outlet mall) sometime in the next few years. That will be a nice addition since there are no hospitals between south Denver and Colorado Springs.

Iowa City has 3 hospitals: U of I, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Mercy Iowa City. Not sure CR / I really has the population or physical growth demands of metro Denver. I believe U of I is planning a major hospital expansion and the two in Cedar Rapids seem to be keeping up with the community’s needs. It seems if there ever were a new hospital in the area it’d just be a subsidiary of one of the existing institutions, but both Mercy and St. Luke’s in CR have numerous doctors offices and urgent care centers around town.
